Christmas tour From Sorrento (San Gregorio Armeno & Salerno Christmas Lights)

We star our excursion from Sorrento for see the atmospher of Napoletan Chrismas time and our Tradiction. With every new start to the Christmas season, the shopping race takes off, and the Italian streets are filled with exquisitely festive colors and light. Shop windows are decorated to attract the eye, while most cities also host their own Christmas markets, where you can purchase typical products and, most of all, presents and almost anything to do with Christmas. Of all the markets, the one you should not miss is the one in Via San Gregorio Armeno in Naples, with its endless shops dedicated to the Christmas Nativity tradition famous all over the world. This street and its shops can be visited at any time of the year - tourists can enjoy a magical Christmas atmosphere when they please. The large part of the artisan workshops are always open with handicraft products on display (though in a smaller quantity than what you can see during Christmastime). The nice part about visiting this market outside the Christmas Season is that shoppers can watch the artisans work and browse their goods in relative tranquility - while the atmosphere is much more crowded and frenetic during the Days of Advent. San Gregorio Armeno represents an important tradition: for families in Naples, Christmas activities also include a visit to this charming street, an obligatory stop before they build their own Nativity at home. Here visitors will see top artisans creating, exhibiting and selling the miniature figures that make up the Nativity scene - masterpieces realized through the skills passed down from generation to generation. In particular, in this street you can find any sort of item suitable for a Nativity scene: from houses big or small, made in cork or cardboard - to mechanical items activated by electric energy such as windmills, waterfalls, even hand-painted, terracotta shepherds and 30cm-tall statues in hand-woven dress. No Nativity personage is left out, from the Holy Family (including the ox and the donkey) to the Magi, as well as the numerous minor characters to complete the scene: shepherds, fruit vendors, fishmongers, butchers, and even a pizza maker next to his oven. The predominant aspect of the typical Neapolitan Nativity is its perfect fusion between the sacred and the profane - after all, it not only involves the statues of the Holy Family, the Magi, and the shepherds in every dimension, shape, and price range, but also very common are parodies of famous characters from both past and present. In fact, gaining a spot in the Neapolitan Nativity has become a sort of goalpost for Italian entertainers, politicians and athletes. These additional caricature figures in the Nativity embody Neapolitans' typical humor and creativity, and have become an ever more significant fixture in the scenes. By now, they are the most popular draw in Via San Gregorio Armeno's stalls. Some craftsmen are extra-specialized in realizing these "original" and of the moment figurines: as soon as a celebrity becomes the object of gossip, his or her face will be used for a new statue and, in most cases, some of the characteristics that brought him fame (or notoriety) are deliberately represented in an exaggerated or hilarious way. Evidently, the Neapolitan Nativity is not just a staid tradition, but a cultural event that follows the flow and trends of the times. It is a world unto itself, constantly shaped and transformed by young, innovative craftsmen that continue to modernize this centuries-old art.   Visiting the Luci d'Artista Light Show in Salerno Each year during the Christmas holidays, the city of Salerno organizes its unique Le Luci d’Artista event with light shows and installations along the streets and public squares, creating a magical atmosphere and attracting thousands of visitors. Here is some important information to organize a trip to see the Luci d’Artista di Salerno. When is the Luci d’Artista in Salerno Held? This year, Le Luci d’Artista will be held from 4 November, 2017 to 22 January, 2018. The light installations are turned on each evening at sunset and stay on late into the night. The Villa Comunale public garden hosts the "Il Giardino Incantato" and is open daily until midnight (and until 1 am on holidays and Sundays). There will be Christmas markets held from the 6th of December to the 8th of January on the Lungomare Trieste waterfront. Getting to Salerno for Le Luci d’Artista The easiest way to reach Salerno is by high-speed train. The Salerno train station is in the center of town, and all the light installations are an easy walk away. If you are arriving by car, remember that can be hard to find parking during the Luci festival, and there is heavy traffic in the town center. The best option is to park at the Stadio Arechi (the stadium located at the highway exit), and take the subway or a city shuttle bus to the center from there. The subway and shuttle buses run until late into the night. Purchase tickets for trains to Salerno What is the Best Itinerary to See all the Installations during Luci d’Artista? The installations are located throughout the town of Salerno, so it's impossible to see them all on a single day trip. The best option is to stay overnight in Salerno so you have time to explore a number of different neighborhoods. That said, if you follow this itinerary, you can see the main installations in the center of town in about 3 hours on foot: Leave from the train station in Piazza della Concordia, where the subway trains and shuttle buses from the Arechi parking lot also drop off passengers. Walk along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the main shopping street, to Piazza Portanova, where there is a large illuminated Christmas tree. From here, continue through the Medieval center of town along the historic Via dei Mercanti. Take a side trip to see the Duomo di Salerno and the Temple of Pomona before returning to Via dei Mercanti and walking to Piazza Largo Campo, the heart of the city's nightlife. Once you leave the historic center of town, you will find yourself at the Villa Comunale public gardens, where each year a magical "giardino incantato" is created. You can finish your walk by returning along the waterfront, stopping to shop at the Christmas market before ending your visit in Piazza Flavio Gioia.

Paestum, Salerno and Bufalo Mozzarella, start from Sorrento

Visitors to Italy often think of Rome, Venice, Naples, and the like as the must-see places, but there are many other towns that are just as significant, such as Salerno and Paestum. Explore these 2 cities on a full-day tour from Sorrento, visiting their monuments and museums and walking their streets. Spent an hour of free time walking along the Salerno seafront and visiting the cathedral or wandering through the pedestrian area. Then head on to Paestum to enjoy lunch before entering its archeological site. In medieval times, Salerno was the world’s capital of medicine. The Monastery of the Benedictine monks, who probably founded its medical school, offered the best instruction available at the time. One of the most famous medical texts of that time was the "Regimen Sanistas Salerni," written in Salerno in Latin and translated into almost every European language. In more modern times Salerno is best remembered for the landing of allied troops on its beaches during World War II. To the east of Salerno, after the headlands of Pontecagnano, Battipaglia, and Eboli, is Paestum. The town of Paestum was founded by the Greeks around 60 B.C. Its name derives from Poseidon (the god of the sea), to whom it was dedicated. It was during this period that the Basilica, the Temple of Poseidon, and the Temple of Ceres were built. Today the temples and ruins–built of a fine yellow limestone–standing in a bower of aromatic herbs, cypress, and oleander, are considered to be the finest examples of their kind. The nearby museum contains many fine sculptures found on the site and also the famous divers’ tomb. Look out for the buffalo that you will see grazing on the roadside during the drive. We will have  a time also to stop for do the bufalo mozzarella Extra costs: Entrance to temples: €6, free for under 18/over 65 Entrance to museums: €4.50, free for under 18/over 65 Lunch and Bufalo mozzarella testing
